Tangled

Tangled: A Disney Animated Film

Overview

Tangled, a Disney 3D animated film, was released in 2010 and loosely based on the fairytale, Rapunzel. The film was directed by Nathan Greno and Byron Howard, and features the voice acting of well known film stars Mandy Moore, Zachary Levi, and Donna Murphy. The film took 6 years to produce, with a budget of roughly $260 million dollars by its release, amking it one of the most expensive films of all time. After its general theather release on November 24th, the film earned $592 million worldwide in box offic revenue.

After being stolen away from her parents, the king and queen of Corona, by an evil sorceress who covets Rapunzel's ability to restore youth by brushing her long, golden hair, Rapunzel is forced to grow up hidden from the outside world hundreds of feet off the ground in a seculded watch tower with no way to escape. On Rapunzel's 18th birthday, Rapunzel wishes to see the "floating lights" that she sees every night on her birthday in person, but her captor, Mother Gothel turns her down. After the infamous criminal Flynn Ryder stumbles into Rapunzel's tower, she makes the bold decision to run away from Mother Gothel and her and Flynn embark on a perilous journey full of trials, tribulations, and various musical numbers to finally see the floating lights in person.

The film's animation style was revolutionary at the time, as it employed using a blend of computer-generated imagery and traditional animation while using non-photorealistic rendering to create the impression of a painting. Animating Rapunzel's hair was one of the biggest challenges the film had to face, and partly why the film took 6 years to make as programs were rewritten over and over again to make her hair move the way the animators wanted.
